In response to the growing threat of landslides in Soy South Ward, Elgeyo Marakwet County, we have launched an innovative initiative that integrates agroforestry and coffee farming, with local youth taking the lead. This initiative not only addresses environmental challenges but also empowers the youth with sustainable agricultural skills and economic opportunities.

Recent community surveys conducted by local youths have highlighted landslides as a major weather-related threat to the region. The surveys revealed the devastating impact of landslides on homes, farms, and infrastructure, posing significant risks to the livelihoods and safety of the community. In light of these alarming findings, a strategic solution was essential.
The Potential of Agroforestry
Our initiative has embraced agroforestry, as an agricultural practice that combines coffee planting with forestry as a sustainable solution. This method has proven effective in stabilizing soil, preventing erosion, and mitigating the impact of landslides. Training and Empowerment
To ensure success, we created a comprehensive training program for Soy South Ward youths, covering coffee nursery establishment and sustainable coffee-growing practices. Training included essential soil and water conservation techniques like terracing and contour planting, and guidance on selecting native tree species for effective agroforestry. Community involvement was key, fostering ownership and responsibility. A robust monitoring system was set up to track plant growth, soil health, and landslide incidence. We also connected youths with coffee markets, providing financial incentives and enhancing economic stability.
